Finding their Voices

All the children have been having lessons with Cathy Mellor who runs the Find Your Voice classes at the school.  These classes aim to improve children’s confidence when speaking in public and to prepare them for external examinations from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.  All of the children passed their examinations with most gaining merits or distinctions.  The children’s examinations differed, with some having to learn, perform and talk about a poem whilst others had to learn a piece of prose.

The celebration evening saw children take to the sofa in a chat show format to talk about their experience during their examination and receive their certificates from guest speaker Rebecca Westwood, Stamford’s Poet Laureate.  Rebecca had composed a special poem just for the event which she performed during the evening.  Kate Atkinson, Senior Deputy Headteacher, commented, ‘The classes have made such a difference to the children’s confidence and they have come to love poetry and performance.  Rebecca’s poem really did capture the reason why we support the Find Your Voice classes.  It is so important for children to know they have a voice and that other want to hear it.  This confidence will stand them in such good stead when they’re older and especially in the world of work.’

The classes continue to run at Westfield this year and the children will be preparing for future exams next summer. You can see them perform at the school’s Christmas Fair on Friday 4th December 5pm – 7.30pm.
