A Cultural Collaboration of Creativy

The collaboration with Charnwood Primary was established last year during Bourne Westfield’s successful journey to Platinum Arts Mark, and it has given the children a valuable insight into cultural diversity and benefits of working together.

Charnwood School visited Bourne Westfield during Arts Week last July; fifty of the children have subsequently become pen pals and last week’s visit was a very special event for them.

The children from both schools worked together during the day to create Mehndi designs on candles, portraits of each other on tiles for display in both schools and Henna Artwork. They cooked together and learnt some traditional dancing as well as sharing playtimes and lunch.

The experience was hugely positive for everyone. Rebecca Beavis Arts Director said ‘It was so lovely to see the children reconnect, interact with each other and learn together about each other’s cultures, we had a fantastic day!  Charnwood made us very welcome and we all learnt so much’.

This collaborative work was presented to the Chartered College of Teaching as part of their annual conference in February by Mr Farhaan Patel, Deputy Headteacher from Charnwood.   Mr Patel added ‘I’m so pleased that this collaboration goes from strength to strength. It was great to see how all of the children engaged with the activities and each other – long may it continue!’

Plans are already underway for Charnwood to visit Bourne Westfield again this July during Arts Week.
