New Buddies

Reading buddies is a one-to-one volunteer literacy project aimed at pupils who are disengaged with reading, or need that extra bit of support to help them progress.

With a combined age of 175 years, the couple first heard about reading buddies through a friend and couldn’t wait to get started. After an initial training session, they came in to meet the children they would be helping, and now spend an hour a week in school. They talk to the pupils, read to them and listen to them read, all the time increasing their confidence and enjoyment of books.

Mr Corner commented, “It’s great to be able to give children time to look at things like punctuation and expression. Seeing them progress is so rewarding. We look forward to coming every week and the children look forward to seeing us.”

Westfield currently has more than 20 reading buddies and is now looking to recruit more. If you can commit to an hour a week, enjoy reading and helping children to achieve and progress, then reading buddies is for you. In return, the school is offering a free training session and a chance to be part of a successful volunteer team. The rewards are huge, both for buddies and pupils. Anyone interested should pop in to the school or telephone 01778 424152.
