It Takes Courage

The medal belonged Miss Marjorie Annie Griffin who was the great, great auntie of Year 4 pupil Holly Rutherford.  The medal was awarded in 1968 for her services when she was in charge of the hostel.  She has the job of looking after women being rehabilitated back into the community having served time in Holloway Prison.  Many were women that had unfortunate backgrounds and Miss Griffin’s role was to ‘keep them on the straight and narrow’.   Miss Griffin was a formidable women and a very good judge of character.

After retiring, her house was opened to Chinese students wishing to learn English at Reading University and was even supporting students when she died in 2014 at the grand old age of 104.
